Most people usually look for a leader to bring them to a new improvement. They devote themselves over time to the cause of brave and responsible leader who inspires them.
As the leader will face many people, competitors, and challenges, the bravery is needed by the leader. Without bravery in the beginning, we will find it difficult to solve the next problems or even we won’t ac1hieve anything. Brave leaders should think in terms of aligning people, plans, and practices around a shared purpose. Besides bravery, of course leader must be very responsible on their job. The responsible leaders are the ones who have the duty to get the job done and seek compassion more than perfection. Brave and responsible leaders have the courage to accept that leadership is not about themselves, but rather about working through behaviors, relationships, values.
Leadership trains us to think diplomatically and integrative because it is a common thing for most leaders. So what’s the meaning of thinking diplomatically? Thinking diplomatically is referred to as keeping your opinions to yourself or being a people-pleaser, but diplomacy doesn’t necessarily mean not voicing your opinions or making yourself heard. To be diplomatic means to evaluate a situation before speaking or acting and to take the best course of action without being overly brash or bold. We tend to grow up thinking of a leader as independent instead of interdependent on other people. True leaders regard themselves as members of the society that they are serving. They always make a concerted effort of using the word “We” or “Government” to assure citizens that they are part of the collective. Hence, it is of paramount importance that leaders must learn to choose words carefully when discussing global issues. They must learn to think and present issues in a diplomatic manner so that they avoid unnecessary verbal attacks from their political rivals. While integrative thinking is an ability to face constructively the tension of opposing ideas and, instead of choosing one at the expense of the other, generate a creative resolution of the tension in the form of a new idea that contains elements of the opposing ideas but is superior to each. For example, It’s easy to get into the destructive rut of thinking that money is the solution to most problems. School boards are notorious for claiming that their hands are tied because they lack the money they want. They cripple themselves. What they really need are creative solutions. Education is a complex issue and has for too long been subject to tunnel-vision problem solving. So, they need integrative thinking. Too often we try to make complex issues too simple and leave ourselves with too few options based on our limited point-of-view. If we instead embrace complexity and learn to deal with it, we might find more and better solutions. Roger Martin, an American advisor writes “More salient features make for a messier problem. But integrative thinkers don’t mind the mess. In fact, they welcome it, because the mess assures them that they haven’t edited out features necessary to the contemplation of the problem as a whole. They welcome complexity because they know the best answers arise from complexity.”
Respect is essential for a leader. Respect is something that does not automatically come with a leadership position even though it can be beneficial. Respect has to be earned and it is one of the most difficult things for a leader to obtain. According to the Oxford Dictionary, respect is “a feeling of deep admiration for someone or something obtained by their abilities, qualities, or achievements." Not every respected leader is liked by everyone and not always popular too. A leader may be well-liked as a person, but actually he/she is weak and afraid to make difficult decisions, shows favoritism to those who stroke his/her ego, and is quite ineffective. Respected well-liked leaders appreciate and recognize effort and talent as much as results and success. They understand and accept that people also need appreciation and encouragement. Respected well-liked leaders also need time to know and to recognize people. They don’t easily get closed to people at the beginning just like everyone’s best friend. They show comfort in leadership and over time in friendship. Act with integrity, be accountable, express interest, act with quality, be dynamic and flexible, show humor, reassure your working companions that the leaders are there for them create winning situations, and be a catalyst.
Almost every skill to achieve success is also a leadership skill. We know that there are many ways to reach success in our life. But if we have gotten the leadership skills in our souls, the chance to reach success is quite big. So, success, however it’s defined, takes good and appropriate actions, and takes skills. Some of these skills are taught in school, others are taught on the job, and still others are obtained from life experience. In leadership, we get so many beneficial things such as self-confidence, self-disciplined, the ability to prioritize, the ability to be a self-starter, the ability to have a great communication skill, and many acquaintances and experiences. Those things are needed to gain success.
As a conclusion, self-confidence, self-discipline, the way we think to solve the problems, the way we interact to society are all needed to face this era where there are rapid expansion of technology and revolution of civilizations. Those things are the skills of a leader. So, we must have leadership skill in our personality because leadership skill really affects our life.
