Film is something we see every day, whether it is a cartoon, a fiction film, a documentary film, or even a short film. But from all kinds of films to watch, we mostly like Box Office films. Box Office films are the films that we watch in the theater, and mostly gain a lot of money.
For example, Hollywood’s film which gain gross income the most is “Avatar”, which was released in 2009 and it got over $2,7 billions gross income worldwide because of its exceptional editing in its post-production phase. The next example is a famous and well-known film, “Titanic”, which was released in 1997 and got over $2,2 billions gross income worldwide because of its interesting storyline of love and sacrifice in its production phase and its romance genre in its pre-production phase that made this film a must-watch film for every couple and romantic film lovers. The final example is “The Avengers” which was released in 2009 and got over $1,4 Billions gross income worldwide because of its success in every phase of the film production, such as big budget of $220 millions in the pre-production, good storyline of saving the earth in the production, and the aggressive advertisement in Google, Youtube, newspaper, and even radio ads in the post production made it the most successful superhero film ever made.
We can compare Hollywood with Bollywood from India because Hollywood’s rival is Bollywood. In 2014, Hollywood got $10.8 billions gross income worldwide, while Bollywood, only got $1.59 billions gross income worldwide. But, have it ever comes in our mind, how would film get that special attention and will usually be a successful film throughout the world. Well, there are a lot of factors that contribute in making a film successful. But, in general there are several major reasons why a film is commercially successful, especially films that are produced by Hollywood. The films produced by Hollywood are usually commercially successful because they are determined by the factor in the pre-production phase, the production phase, and the post-production phase.

The first factor is the pre-production phase. In this phase this is when we decide what film genre that we are going to make. The correct choosing of film genre really affects on how much money we should prepare for the budget, which will lead us to what kind of professionalism of actors we should hire. And after that how much we should spend for editing and advertising, and eventually it lead us into how much profit that we could get if we produce the film. After that, we decide on how much budget is available for a film production. For example, according to Ralph at www.yoexpert.com , the average minimum budget of movies that are released by Hollywood major studios are roughly around $1 millions. And that goes for everything. From casting for actors and actresses, paying the actors, editing, until advertising all included in that average $1 millions budget. And that’s why we should choose our genre carefully, because if not, our budget would raise up drastically than what we have already planned before. Even though, a big budget film doesn’t always guarantee a great successful, but it is still important to have a correct amount of budget so that our film still have a chance to at least make a budget turn over for our film. Finally, we have to do the casting session to search for great talent of actors and actresses for our film.
And in casting session, it is important to hire the correct and affordable casting director for our film because great actors and actresses really affect on how our movie would look like when we watch it and how it would get the attention of the fans of our actors’ or actresses’. And if a film has been through all the following pre-production phase, the film would usually be a commercially successful film.

The second factor is when the movie is being produced. This is the phase when we conclude the story or plot of our film. The plot is the most important thing in every film. A great film will surely have a great plot in it. A great plot also affects on how much profit and fame that we could get. A good plot will get us some profit and fame, but a great plot, will make us receive a great amount of profit and fame. Which is important if we are planning on making a sequel, or even a triquel on the movie. For example, “Titanic” is one of the best film ever made and it gained its profit and popularity because of its touching story. Next, it is the acting that counts. A great film with a great plot, will surely have a great acting from the actors because acting will represent on how good and serious the film is made. Let’s take Leonardo Di Caprio’s acting as Jordan Belfort in “The Wolf of Wall Street”. We can conclude that Di Caprio’s really gives everything he got on that film. We can see it on how he acts. He really did a great job on the acting to make it looked real. And that’s why I think he should receive an Oscar for it, at least an Oscar Nominee. And finally, it is because of the great actors and actresses that would help make a film successful. A correct choosing of actors really matters on how a film will be judged successful or not. For example, a professional actor will surely deliver a great performance in the film. For example, Heath Ledger, the actor of The Joker on The Dark Knight film, locked himself up in a hotel room for six weeks to “form” the character of The Joker. This finally makes the world consider him as the best modern actor. In which, a couple months after his death, he receives an “Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor”.
Lastly, we have finally come into the past-production phase. In this phase, this is when all of the recording (screening) phase has already been done, so that we could move into editing. Editing part is one of the most crucial parts in film production because in this part we will sync the video and the audio, as well as create some effects for the film. For example, “The Avengers” must have spent a lot of times to create the stunning visual effects, from creating “The Hulk”, until creating the creatures that attacks the earth. And that’s why, its gross is over $1.4 billions, not only because of the great plot, but also its exceptional visual effects. Next, we move into the promotion part. This is when we promote our film into social media, or even conventional media like newspaper. Advertising is proven effective for films. Films that promoted in newspaper, social media, radio, television, and even billboards, are more likely to get higher gross and popularity that those who don’t . For example, “The Avengers” trailer itself on YouTube, has reached more than 24 Millions of views, that’s extraordinary. And then we finally come to the final part, which is campaign.

Amazing campaign will surely make the film more famous and will make more people curious about the film, so it will increase our film’s gross income. For example, a famous local magazine is holding a competition in which the winner would get a free ticket to watch a premiere of the movie. Using that strategy, is not only profitable for the film itself, but also for the magazine. Both of them got the benefits from promoting the film by holding a competition.

In short, a film is commercially successful, not only because of its big budget and well-known actors/actresses. But also determined by how it is made, from the deciding the genre and promoting the film itself.
