Why Many Children Are Exposed to Domestic Violence

According to a report, crime against children in Indonesia is over 1900 cases per year. And it is always increasing annually.
"Crime against children are dominated by physical abuse, sexual abuse, sexual assaults, and bullying" said Maria Ulfah, the chairperson of Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI-Komisi Perlindungan Anak Indonesia). Surprisingly, 70% abuses are carried out by their parents. Violent crimes against children can happen any time, anywhere, and by anybody. Violent crimes against children by their parents can be caused by the fact that the parents had a bad childhood, the parents have a hard life, or they are not ready to be parents.

Some parents had a lot of bad memories during their childhood. They might have experienced violence with their own parents that can cause them to treat their own children badly. They can abuse their children verbally. For example, Adit was always called troublemaker and stupid by his father. He was so upset about that. As a result, he does the same thing to his son. They can abuse their children physically. For example, when she was a child, Mary got hit by her mother every time she made a mistake. Like Adit, she was so upset. And now, she vents her negative feelings to her own children.

A hard life can cause parents do violence towards their children. For Example, Joshua cannot pay the bills because he only makes less than a million a month. Therefore, he blames his children by saying bad words to vent his stress. Another example, Lisa was in very bad mood because her boss was yelling at her all day long. When she got home, she felt stressed. Then, she would vent her anger towards her children.

Being a parent is very stressful and has many expectations. Having a family can be very challenging for those who are not ready to be a parent and don’t know what to expect. Parents, who can’t handle the life of being a parent, are more likely to get mad and out of control. If the parents can’t hold back their anger, they may abuse their own children. For example, Lucy got a baby at 17. She still doesn't know how to take care of the baby. When her baby cried, she was confused how to handle her baby, she felt stressed and mad. And because of it, she treats her baby badly.

There are many ways to protect and help children from violence. The government can create a program that can help parents by giving them free consultations and dissemination. I believe that the crime against children starts in home. Parents must take responsibility for their children and show them love and guidance from an early age so they learn to respect the rights of others.

In conclusion, violence and abuse may take place at a place where the children are supposed to have protection and carried out by people known to the children and who are supposed to protect them. Many children are exposed to various forms of violence and abuse. Sadly, only a small portion of these harmful practices are investigated. And only a few of the perpetrators are apprehended. In the long term, the abuse can affect the child's either physically or mentally which will weaken the child’s ability to learn and socialize with other people. This kind of domestic violence and abuse must be stopped soon to save the future of the children.
